I read a lot of internet marketing blogs. And there’s one thing most top marketers are doing right now, which annoys the heck out of me.
I will be about 10 seconds into reading a blog post when suddenly a popup appears. It blocks me in mid sentence. The popup asks for my email address.
I’ve got so annoyed by this selfish intrusion into my privacy, that on principle I will NEVER sign up using one of these popups.
I know all the statistics about how having a popup that appears a few seconds after people get to the page, has been proven to increase conversions. But for me, as the person who is being “marketed to” it is infuriating.
But you’ve got to laugh sometimes…
Today I discovered this clever spoof website by Matt Giovanisci, which made me chuckle. If you have a spare 2 minutes you can see it here. If you hate intrusive popups as much as I do, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
Can I have your email address before you go?
P.S. You’ll see I do have an email sign up form below this post. It is NOT a popup. And never will be! The reason it’s at the bottom of the page is that I figure if someone has read that far, they might be interested in hearing more from me! But popups on this site? Never in a million years!
